Definition of Inscape

Gerald Manley Hopkins coined the word "inscape" to name that which is totally unique about anybody or anything.  Just as there is a landscape that defines an outer entity there is an inscape that defines the inner life.  Hopkins came to know that the inscape is God's signature, that which says that this was made by God.


Let me seek the gift of silence, of poverty, and solitude, where everything I touch is turned into prayer:  where the sky is my prayer, the birds are my prayer, and the wind in the trees is my prayer, for God is all in all.
